Reims/Troyes
4 nights from £209 per person
Day 1 & 2
Arrive in Calais and drive to Reims in the beautiful Champagne region (approximately 270km), where you will spend 2 nights in the 3* Hotel de la Paix. Famous for it's champagne houses, Reims is one of the capitals of Champagne and certainly the most prestigious. The city is full of culture, festivals and fine dining but the 'piece de la resistance' is the vast array of sites and champagne houses to visit. Places of interest include:
- Notre Dame Cathedral is a masterpiece of Gothic art, the impressive Notre Dame is one of France's greatest cathedrals. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has seen 32 French kings crowned under its soaring ceiling, throughout the course of it's history.
- Champagne Houses - it is well worth visiting a selection of the champagne houses. Whilst each visit can vary in content, a tour of the châteaux, the immense cellars and the unfolding story of the complexities involved in making champagne can be quite an amazing experience. It's possible to arrange visits to most of the champagne houses, some charge a fee, but it's worth it for the tour of the cellars, carved out of chalk many centuries ago where thousands of bottles are stacked up at their various levels of production, and of course the tasting.
- The main Champagne houses including G.H. Martel, Lanson, G H Mumm, Pommery, Taittinger and Veuve Clicquot are within walking distance of the cathedral.
Day 3 & 4
Leaving Reims the following morning, drive south onto Troyes and stay 2 nights in the historic 4* Hôtel de la Poste. Troyes, ancient capital of the champagne area, is a lovely medieval town of timber-frame houses, narrow streets and a beautifully preserved historical centre. Whether you're looking to spend a romantic weekend, celebrate a special occasion in superb surroundings, or have a short touring break of the Champagne region, Troyes is definitely a place not to be missed. Places to visit include the:
- Musée d'Art Moderne (Museum of Modern Art)
- Maison de l'Outil et de la Pensée Ouvrière (Tool Museum)
- Cathédrale St Pierre et St Paul - This fine Gothic cathedral has 1500m² of stained glass dating from between the 13th to the19th centuries.
