The 'Garden of France'
Known as the Garden of France, the Loire Valley takes its name from the majestic river, which, meanders through the countryside. This truly is chateaux country with stunning properties built in the region ever since the 1500s. Each chateau is unique; many combine the best elements of Gothic and Italian Renaissance architecture to create fairytale images. The chateau at Usse was the model for Charles Perrault’s Sleeping Beauty. In fact the Loire Valley has so many chateaux that the whole valley has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Grape varieties from the Loire include Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc (sometimes known locally as Breton).
