Krakow is known as the cultural capital of Poland and some of its theatrical events are well worth watching; the local theatre companies are some of the best in the country and performances are often held by visiting international companies. Cabaret is also very popular, with a history dating back over 100 years. The Szymanowski Philharmonic Orchestra is one of Poland’s most highly regarded orchestras and the Capella Cracoviensis choir is also held in high esteem, with regular performances throughout the city. There are also theatre, film, music and ballet festivals which take place throughout the year.
With over 4000 pubs and clubs in the Old Town of Krakow alone, you will not have to walk far to find a suitable nightspot. Particularly popular are the cellar bars around the Rynek and in the Stare Miasto, which stay open until the early hours. Bars in Krakow do not tend to have such a mixture of ages as other European places, and individual bars will normally appeal to a younger or older crowd but not a mixture. . If there is live music playing in a bar, you may be charged a small entrance fee.
Jazz has a long tradition in Kraków and there are frequent performances going on throughout the city.
