Vana Tallinn is a typical Estonian liqueur, first produced in the 1960’s and tasting a bit like cough syrup. Slightly more palatable are the excellent Saku and Tartu lagers; Saku is exported in large quantities to the Japanese town that shares its name.
Many say the best locally produced vodka is Viru Valge. The Estonia-bottled Georgian brandy, called Gremi, is also a favourite as is Saare Dþinn, a gin flavoured with berries from the Estonian islands.
As Estonia does not have a big wine industry of its own, there are virtually no restrictions on imports meaning the choice of international wines is outstanding. The few locally made wines, like the Põltsamaa brand, tend to be on the sweet side.
The Estonians are also keen coffee drinkers and Café Culture is an important part of Estonian life.
