Mechelen is a small but pretty city whose many fine buildings are a reminder that in the Middle Ages, it was once one of the most important cities in Belgium with more inhabitants than Antwerp. The imposing medieval tower of St Rumboldt's church dominates the skyline, but there are plenty of other historical buildings in the city, including the beautiful former palace of Margaret of Austria, the Archbishop's palace (he still resides in Mechelen) and a fairy-tale-like city hall.
Please note that the churches of Mechelen are not open on Mondays
