Situated in the heart of Flanders, only a short drive from Brussels, this centuries old city has much to offer. The heart of the city is centred around the Grand Square, which is lined with cafés, St Peter’s church and the impressive Gothic City Hall. Surrounding the square are cobbled streets and alleyways enticing you further to explore the stunning architecture and heritage of this wonderful city, with plenty of small bars and cafes to stop at along the way to soak up the friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Leuven is best known for having one of the oldest universities in the world and, more recently, as the home of the world-famous Stella Artois brewery, although even this has references dating back to 1366!
"Famous Belgians include Audrey Hepburn, Jean Claude Van Damme, Plastic Bertrand, and Kim Clijsters."
The city is so compact that nowhere is more than a 20-minute walk from the centre and with the centre pedestrianised, walking or cycling are perfect ways of getting around.
With over 220 restaurants and 170 cafes, you’ll be spoilt for choice when eating out.
Leuven’s ‘Groot Begijnhof’ was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
In the mild weather, the squares come alive when the bars, cafes and restaurants spill out on to their terraces.
