The Groeninge Museum

Contains a superb collection of Flemish art dating back to the 15th century. Bosch, Hans Memling and Bruegel are all there, but the star is Van Eyck’s powerful Madonna with Canon van der Paele. Closed Mondays. Dijver 12.

The Chocolate Story Museum

A slick, four-floor museum dedicated to chocolate. Open daily 10am – 5pm. Visit www.choco-story.be  for more information.

The Folklore Museum

Situated in restored 17th century almshouses, this warren of reconstructed rooms and shops, includes a chemist, a cobblers, confectioners and a classroom, and it is curated by the locals. Rolweg 40.

St Janshospitaal Memling Museum

The former wards of one of Europe’s oldest surviving medieval hospital house a collection of artwork and furniture as well as bizarre surgical instruments. Visitors are also able to visit the 17th century pharmacy. The hospital's adjoining chapel houses the Memling Museum devoted to the 15th century Flemish painter Hans Memling who lived and studied in Bruges. Closed Mondays. Cost about €8. Mariastraat 38.

Gruuthuse Museum

This 15th century mansion was bought by the city of Bruges and opened as a museum. On display is an impressive collection of furniture, silverware, ceramics, tapestries and sculptures from the 13th to 19th centuries. Lace making, a tradition in Bruges that dates back to the Middle Ages, is also featured with displays of antique lace work. Closed Mondays. Dijver 17.

Bruges Diamond Museum
This museum illustrates Belgiums connection with diamonds and Bruges' history as Europe's oldest diamond centre as well as providing a general knowledge into the world of diamonds and daily diamond polishing demonstrations. 43 Katelijnestraat, Ankerplein.

Archeological Museum

Collections of ceramics, pottery and glass disovered during excavations of the city centre date from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages. Closed Mondays. Mariastraat 36.

Arentshuis Brangwyn Museum
Named after the painter and engraver Frank Brangwyn, who was born in Bruges but of British nationality, this museum, housed in a magnificent 18th century mansion, displays much of his work along side collections of ceramics and glassware. Dijver 16.

Museum of Our Lady of the Potterie
Situated in a historical hospital complex, this museum houses a collection of numerous sculptures and paintings as well as furniture from the gothic to baroque era. The adjacent church has one of the city's best- preserved baroque interiors and boasts a wealth of stained glass windows, silverware, paintings and sculptures. Potterierei 79.

Lace Centre (Kantcentrum)
Both a museum and workshop situated in charming old almhouses. Demonstrations of the intricate art of lace making take place in the workshop whilst the history of this art is illustrated in the museum where ancient examples of skilled lace work are on display. Peperstraat 3a.
