Massif Central - Overview

The Massif Central is the third largest mountain range after the Alps and the Pyranees, it is a huge region which covers about a fifth of the country and is made up of an ancient plateau of granite, crystalline rock and extinct volcanoes situated to the south of the country.

Throughout the year the region is popular for sports enthusiasts. In winter there are a number of well-equipped ski resorts, whilst in summer it is popular with walkers. Due to a number of natural springs, there are also some excellent spa resorts.

There are few large towns in the area. Le-Puy-en-Velay is one of the most interesting as huge rocks of lava punctuate the town. The cathedral is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site and the town is also the starting point for one of the most important pilgrimage paths in the country. One of the sights not to be missed is Rocher Corneille, a dominating rock with a huge statue of the Virgin Mary and Child.
