The Jura mountains attract a large number of visitors each year who come for the excellent outdoor activities such as skiing, mountain biking, walking and hiking. Visitors also come for the stunning landscapes and fresh mountain air as well the good wines produced in the region. In fact the vineyards of Jura are amongst the oldest in France and cover 2,500 hectares.
There are a number of attractions in the area including the village at Chateau-Chalon, one of the ‘most beautiful villages of France’ which features the remains of a 13th century castle, an ancient fortified gateway and an 11th century romasque church.
The town of Arbois is well worth a visit. It is a pretty town with ancient houses set alongside the banks of the River Cuisance. There are two old mills and the Chateau Pécauld but the main attraction is the former laboratory of Louis Pasteur which has preserved. It is also possible to visit the childhood home of the scientist in the nearby town of Dole.
