South Tipperary attracts a large number of visitors each year and there is a good choice of holiday cottages in the county. The landscape is one of lush valleys and mountains – the Galtee Mountains and Slievenamon, surrounded in legend, which has a number of fairly easy walking routes to its summit and some great views when you reach the top.
One of the most famous sites in South Tipperary is the Rock of Cashel, a medieval settlement including a castle, cathedral, round tower and the remains of two churches dating back almost 1000 years. The 15th century Cahir Castle is one of the best-preserved in Ireland and is a must for anyone visiting Tipperary. It is located on a rocky island in the River Suir and incorporates some of the original 12th century castle which was built by Conor O’Brien, Lord of Thomond.
