Sligo County in the North-West of Ireland is a popular short break destination with stunning scenery that attracts visitors from across the world and has inspired artists as well as the Irish poet WB Yeats. It has a number of fantastic seaside resorts, lively towns, family attractions and historic sites.
Sligo Town is the largest town in the North-West. It is surrounded by mountains and built on gravel ridges giving it a unique appearance. It is a lively town with good shops, restaurants and pubs.
The county has some fantastic blue flag beaches - at Enniscrone there is a five kilometre stretch of sandy beach which is popular with families in the summer and provides a great place to walk and enjoy the scenic coastline at any time of year. Situated on the shores of Killala Bay, Enniscrone is also a great spot for angling and has all the facilities you’d expect from a seaside resort such as an amusement park, crazy golf, tennis and a lively nightlife.
County Sligo has some important historical sites. Carrowmore is Ireland’s largest megalithic burial site with over 60 tombs, some pre-dating Newgrange in County Meath by 700 years. The monastic settlement at Drumcliff is also the final resting place of the WB Yeats.
