North Tipperary is a rich farming region with rolling countryside and valleys with pretty rivers. There are some stunning landscapes in which to go walking, cycling, horse-riding or fishing - most notably the Slieve Bloom Mountains to the north east of Roscrea and Lough Derg.
Thurles is North Tipperary’s largest town and is a good base for exploring the region. It has excellent facilities for tourists including two visitor centres, horse racing, greyhound racing, golf courses as well as a museum of the great famine. The town of Nenagh was the seat of the first Butler of Ireland with an interesting heritage centre and some good architecture: 18th century town houses sit alongside the 19th century court house, dominated by the 13th century Nenagh Castle. There are a number of other interesting sites in North Tipperary including Roscrea Castle and the impressive Cistercian Holycross Abbey.
