Meath is one of Ireland’s most historic regions. The Hill of Tara in County Meath was once the seat of the High Kings of Ireland and there are many other important monuments and points of interest across the county. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Newgrange is a must, dating back to around 3200BC these megalithic passage tombs are older than Stonehenge and the Pyramids of Giza. Close to Newgrange are the passage tombs of Knowth and Dowth as well as one of the most important historical sites in Ireland: the site of the Battle of Boyne, fought in 1690 between King William III and King James II.
The county town of Navan is a good base for a short break in Meath and for exploring the Boyne Valley. There are some good self-catering properties as well as great restaurants, bars and shops.
The Heritage Town of Trim is a pretty town on the banks of the River Boyne with medieval buildings including Trim Castle, the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland started in 1176 and renovated in 2000 and the location for the movie Braveheart.
