County Longford is situated in the heart of Ireland’s Midlands and is a tranquil area known for its pretty countryside of farmland, wetlands and lakes. The county town of Longford is situated on the River Camlin on the road that runs from Dublin to Sligo. It is an interesting town with a number of historic buildings, the oldest being the courthouse which was built in 1792. Other points of interest are the renaissance-style 19th century St Mel’s Cathedral and the county museum.
Other towns and villages in the county include Abbeylara, Ballinamuck, Carrickboy, Drumlish, Granard, Newtowncashel, Newtownfobes and Ardagh, a heritage village built in the 1860s.
