Longford - Overview

County Longford is situated in the heart of Ireland’s Midlands and is a tranquil area known for its pretty countryside of farmland, wetlands and lakes. Visitors travel to the region to get away from the hustle and bustle of their day-to-day lives and experience a more laid-back way of life, to take walks through the gentle rolling countryside and fish in the pretty lakes and rivers.

The county town of Longford is situated on the River Camlin on the road that runs from Dublin to Sligo. It is an interesting town with a number of historic buildings, the oldest being the courthouse which was built in 1792. Other points of interest are the renaissance-style 19th century St Mel’s Cathedral and the county museum.

Other towns and villages in the county include Abbeylara, Ballinamuck, Carrickboy, Drumlish, Granard, Newtowncashel, Newtownfobes and Ardagh, a heritage village built in the 1860s.
