Galway city is a vibrant city and a great base for exploring County Galway and the West coast of Ireland. It is one of Europe’s fastest growing cities, and with a population of 65,000, it has become the country’s third city after Dublin and Cork. The region is well known for its handcrafts and there are a number of interesting shops in the city selling locally made goods such as jewellery, woodwork, pottery and glass.
Beyond the city the countryside is unspoilt and dramatic, perfect for walking holidays - there are mountains and picturesque valleys dotted with lakes. The Galway coastline provides great opportunities for scenic drives as well as more active holidays exploring the region on foot, bicycle or horseback. The county has strong links with horses and the Galway Races are considered by many to be Ireland’s most exciting horse-racing event.
The Aran Islands of the cost of Galway (Inis Mor, Inis Meain and Inis Oirr) are stunningly beautiful with a unique island culture. The islands can be easily reached for a day trip or short break with regular ferry services from Rossaveal (50 kilometres from Galway). The crossing takes about 40 minutes and there are coach services operating between Galway and Rossaveal. Aer Arann also operates flights from Connemara Regional Airport.
