County Donegal is Ireland’s most northerly county and a popular location for short breaks thanks to its stunning landscapes: dramatic cliffs 300 metres high, mountains that change colour with the seasons and an unspoilt coastline dotted with deserted white sandy beaches. Visitors are also drawn to this area of North-West Ireland for its Irish culture including the legendary craic, traditional pubs and vibrant music scene. In fact Donegal Town is home to the Donegal Music Festival, a four-day event usually held in July which has an Irish theme but features a wide range of genres including folk, pop, punk, jazz and rock.
There are a number of other interesting towns and villages in the county of Donegal, most notably Ballyshannon, the oldest town in Ireland. It remains a bustling town full of character and a fascinating place for a short break. It has a good beach where a variety of watersports are practised and the town itself has pretty Georgian houses set against a backdrop of mountains, a waterfall and river.
Letterkenny was once a tiny fishing village but it has grown into the largest and most densely populated town in Donegal. It is a good choice for a short break with a lively nightlife.
