County Clare on the west coast of Ireland is a region of dramatic scenery including the 200 metre cliffs of Moher and the barren landscape of The Burren with its ancient dolmens, tombs, cairns and lunar-like landscape. There are plenty of opportunities for activities in the region including watersports, fishing, golf, horse-riding, walking, cycling, birdwatching and surfing.
The largest town in the county is the ancient town of Ennis, one of Ireland’s prettiest with narrow streets, arched tunnel passageways and picturesque character buildings. The town’s oldest building is the 13th century friary which contains some interesting examples of medieval sculpture. In contrast, the Gló² Irish Music Centre is a modern auditorium where you can watch performances of traditional music, dance and theatre most days. Other interesting towns and villages in the county include Ballyvaughan, Doolin, Doonbeg, Dromoland, Knock and Shannon, which has an international airport.
There are a number of excellent sandy beaches including Spanish Point, Lahinch and Fanore. For the best views of the coastline and nearby Aran Islands it’s possible to book a boat trip with one of the many companies who offer these, or even arrange a private cruise.
