Perthshire is situated in the centre of Scotland, around an hour from Glasgow or Edinburgh by road or rail. It is a great location for a Scottish short break – easily accessible and yet completely different from the nearby cities. The region has some of the most scenic glens (or valleys), impressive lochs such as Loch Tay and Loch Leven and some interesting historic towns. Loch Leven is the largest loch in the Scottish lowlands and home to the romantic Loch Leven Castle, from which Mary Queen of Scots escaped in the 16th century. Towns worth visiting include Aberfeldy, Gleneagles, Crieff and Perth an important market town for hundreds of years. Today shoppers are attracted to the town for its independent family-run businesses and pedestrianised high street. Scone Palace in Perth was once the site of the coronation of Scottish kings, in fact 42 kings were crowned here.
Perthshire sits on the boundary between the Highlands and Lowlands and it is this unique location which makes it a popular location for outdoor pursuits. In fact it is known as the Adventure Capital of Scotland. As well as more leisurely pursuits such as golf, walking and fishing, there is mountain walking, cycling, cliff jumping, canyoning and microlight flights.
