Voted the 4th best island in the world by National Geographic Magazine, Skye is one not to miss – you can choose from a wide selection of self-catering properties across the island in stunning locations. It is possible to get to Skye via the bridge at Kyle or by ferry in summer and flights operate into Inverness where you can get coach/rail links or hire a car. There is also self-catering accommodation on the islands of Orkney and Arran.
The main attraction of Skye is its intricate coastline which is made up of desolate sandy beaches, rugged rocks, bays and small islands which form a unique pattern in the sea. Inland the mountains, lochs and rugged moorland provide a contrasting but equalling beautiful landscape to explore. Both land-based and water-based sports are particularly popular on Skye and many visitors are also attracted for the bountiful wildlife which is always evident.
Skye is on the same latitude as Moscow, warmed by the Gulfstream it benefits from a much milder climate but experiences the same long summer days when it stays light until midnight. If you’re lucky enough you might time your stay on Skye to witness the northern lights. Although they peak every eleven years they can occur at any time providing there’s a dark moonless night, although they are more common in winter.
