Nottinghamshire is synonymous with the tale of Robin Hood and today it is still possible to relive the story in the city, explore the ancient oaks of Sherwood Forest and the forbidding walls of Nottingham Castle. During October half term each year the city also plays host to the Robin Hood Pageant: a favourite family event with live jousting, a replica medieval village, falconry displays, musicians and entertainers.
The city and surrounding area offers much more. For culture vultures, the county will not disappoint. There is a wide selection of theatres, cinemas, galleries, music venues and cultural events – in fact Nottinghamshire claims to have more artists per capita than anywhere else in Europe. In Autumn 2009 the choice will expand further with the opening of Nottingham Contemporary, one of the largest art spaces in the UK.
The Goose Fair is held on the first weekend of October each year. It is one of Europe’s most famous travelling fairs with over 500 attractions, 700 years of history and the opportunity to try the local speciality mushy peas and mint sauce.
For anyone looking for a more active short break there are plenty of options including golf, fishing, cycling and with at the National Watersports Centre there is canoeing, rowing, sailing, water skiing and even white water rafting.
