Cumbria is home to England’s five highest mountains as well as the country’s deepest lake, a truly unique landscape that has made it one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations and world-renowned. The stunning scenery provides a romantic backdrop for any short break in a remote cottage, or the perfect natural environment to sample the many outdoor activities on offer.
The sport of climbing was founded in the area in the 19th century and today climbing remains a popular activity in the Lake District. There are walks and climbs for all levels as well as many other adrenelin sports such as abseiling, mountain biking, caving, off-roading, waterskiing, diving and kayaking.
For a more relaxing method of viewing the rugged beauty of the lakes, it’s hard to imagine anything more appealing than enjoying a glass of champagne during a hot air balloon ride floating with the lakes and hills like a patchwork quilt below.
After a busy day exploring the area you’ll be spoilt for choice for places to relax: there is an impressive number of cosy English pubs stocking real ales as well as first-class restaurants serving local produce. In the many quaint towns and villages there are interesting shops and art galleries to explore; there are numerous National Trust houses and a whole host of other family attractions. As a UK short break destination, the Lakes are hard to beat!
