The Essex coastline is largely unspoilt with river estuaries, mudflats and saltmarshes which is particularly popular with birdwatchers and sailors but is a popular short-break destination for all. The region has a wealth of historical sites including the town of Colchester which claims to be the oldest recorded town in Britain. As well as a fascinating Norman castle keep and Roman ruins, there is a good shopping centre and dining options. However, any real shopaholics should head to the Lakeside Shoppping Centre at Thurrock with over 250 shops.
There is a good selection of sandy beaches and family entertainment at Clacton-on-Sea, Southend-on-Sea as well as many other towns along the coast whilst Brightlingsea at the mouth of the River Colne is be a little more sophisticated and offers some of the best sailing on the East Coast.
