The East Devon coastline is referred to as the Jurassic Coast (along with neighbouring Dorset) thanks to the erosion and exposure of 185 million years of Earth’s history and the discovery of countless fossils and dinosaur bones. The area has been awarded World Heritage Status by UNESCO for its unique geological history. Today you can walk much of the coastline and perhaps even discover fossils yourself.
The area includes the towns of Exeter, Exmouth, Sidmouth, Seaton and Budleigh Salterton to name a few. There are a number of excellent sandy and shingle beaches and seaside resorts with all the attractions you would expect including donkey rides at Dawlish Warren. Inland there are some picturesque villages with tearooms serving the naughty but nice Devonshire cream teas.
