Bronte Country - Overview

Bronte Country refers to the area of the Pennines in West Yorkshire and East Lancashire which was home to the Bronte sisters Charlotte, Emily and Anne and inspired their classic novels. The rugged windswept moors and striking carpet of heather inspired their works and it’s easy to see why the landscape sparked such imagination in the sisters.

The Bronte family lived at the Haworth parsonage which is now home to the famous Bronte Parsonage Museum and it is where they wrote their most famous works including Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre. There are a number of self-catering properties to rent for a weekend in the sister’s home town of Haworth as well as Hebden Bridge, Leeds, Keighley and other locations within Bronte Country.

The area lies predominantly on Millstone Grit which is a dark sandstone and gives the rocky landscape a bleakness but provides dramatic scenery for walkers. Although the area is best known for the Bronte sisters and many will visit the region to trace the steps of the authors and their famous characters, there are many other attractions including the UNESCO World Heritage Centre of Saltaire in Bradford, an industrial village built by Sir Titus Salt; The National Media Museum in Bradford; the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway.
