Anglesey - Overview

An area of outstanding natural beauty with fantastic beaches, birdlife and much more.

Anglesey is an island in north-west Wales which is separated from the mainland by the Menai Straits but is accessible via suspension bridges. Most of the island’s coastline has been classified as an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (ANOB)’ due to the spectacular scenery and diversity of the landscape.

The area is particularly popular with beach lovers and families looking for a weekend by the sea. There are a variety of beaches includes vast stretches of sand at Llanddwyn, Cemaes and Red Wharf Bay as well as picturesque coves such as Cable Bay, Moelfre and Porth Cwyfan.

Anglesey also attracts a lot of ornithologists as it is home to South Stack Cliffs, a bird reserve which attracts over 4,000 seabirds each year who breed on the cliffs, including puffins, guillemots, razorbills and choughs.

Anglesey is also home to Holyhead and the village with the longest place name in the United Kingdom: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. The village, commonly referred to as Llanfair PG or Llanfairpwll, is a popular tourist destination with most people making a trip to the railway station for a photograph next to the sign.

Other places recommended to visit is Beaumaris Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Anglesey Sea Zoo and RSPB’s Ellin’s Tower Seabird Centre.
