Starting with the rise of the Movida Madrileña movement in the 1970’s, Madrid has today become the hot bed of European nightlife with a wide array of options available after dark. There is always something on in this pulsating city but Fridays and Saturdays remain the biggest nights with locals venturing out for a latish dinner followed by further frivolity in some of the many bars and clubs.
Clubs/Dance
Generally open at 11.30pm and close at about 4.30am. Some however stay open until 6am and others even go on past midday. Expect to pay €5-20 for entry, which generally includes the first drink. It is worth noting that the scene and club locations can change at very short notice so please check out La Guía del Ocio for the latest information. The main hotbeds for clubs are around Sol, Gran Vía and Ópera. The largest is Kapital (Calle Atocha 125), which is laid out over seven floors. For a more unusual experience, check out Palacio de Gaviria (Calle Arenal 9). Set in a 19 th century palace, it is a very popular spot for a late night drink and dance.
Bars
Over 12,000 bars in the city with a wide range of choice. Bars with DJs or recorded music (discobares), generally open from 6:30pm-3am and rarely charge an entrance fee. In mild weather, terrazas prove to be popular in early evening with recommended areas for a bustling, eclectic mix being Santa Ana and Chueca.
Shows
Try Opera at the Teatro Real (www.teatro-real.com) or the Teatro Calderón (91 632 0114). There is also a vibrant Flamenco and Jazz scene in Madrid. For Flamenco try Casa Patas (Calle Cañizares 10) and Café Central (Plaza de Angel 10), is rated one of the best jazz clubs in the world.
Other Activities
Due to some beautiful and imaginative lighting, Madrid looks its best at night with most major monuments splendidly illuminated.
