Budapest - Getting Around

Budapest is divided in to 23 districts designated on maps and street signs by Roman numerals. Addresses begin with the number of the district.

The best way to make your way around the city is on foot. For travelling between main sites/districts, the public transportation system (BKV) is however extensive and affordable with only a few parts of the city thirty minutes away and in fact most can be reached in half this time. Most services operate from 4.30am until 11pm. Tickets are purchased prior to boarding at tobacco shops, subway stations, hotels or street vendors. Passengers must validate their tickets in a ticket puncher and present them, upon request, to an inspector. Please note: tickets are checked frequently on all lines. One-day, three-day, weekly and monthly passes are available at the ticket counters in Budapest. More information at the BKV Rt. website

In additional to the ‘normal’ public transport you would expect, Budapest also has other slightly unusual forms of transport:-

The Funicular - opened in 1870, authentic-style carriages that ascends from Clark Adam ter to the Buda Palace on Varhegy . The journey takes a couple of minutes. At the lower terminus, at the foot of Chain Bridge, stands the 0 kilometre stone, from which all distances are measured in Hungary.

7.30am-10pm daily. Closed on Mondays of every even-numbered week.

The Children’s Railway - this service is operated by 10-14-year-old uniformed children - except for the engineer - under the supervision of adults. The narrow-gauge railway, with some open carriages, takes about 50 minutes to cover the 11-km route, mostly through woods. The train calls at János Hill, the city's highest point, with the 23.5 metre, four-terraced Erzsébet Lookout Tower. The terminus is Hűvösvölgy, a large meadow - a favourite excursion destination for people living in Budapest. Operates 10am-6pm (except 24 th October – 14 th March 10am-4pm) (Tuesday - Friday).

Chairlift - travels between Zugliget and Janos-hegy, similar to a ski lift with chairs hanging from a haulage cable. The elevation between the two termini is 262 m. The journey takes 15 minutes, providing an unforgettable view for passengers.

Cogwheel railway - put into service in 1874 making it Europe's third cogwheel railway. Its upper terminus is at a height of 427 meters on Széchenyi Hill, where the Széchenyi Lookout Tower is to be found.

Suburban trains called HÉV also form part of the public transport system. You can use them to visit towns outside Budapest such as:-

Szentendre (from Batthyány tér) - 20 km from Budapest, the town dates back to the 14th Century. A cultural and tourist centre, and a town of arts and artists, right on the bank of the Danube. A Mediterranean atmosphere, Serb Orthodox monuments and 12 museums - one of which is an open-air folk museum

Godollo (from Örs vezér tere) - the most famous sight of the town, 30 km from Budapest, is the Grassalkovich Palace, the largest in Hungary. Maria Theresa stayed here several times, and it was the favourite home of Queen Elisabeth (Sisi) in the 19th century. Restoration is underway, but several wings are already open to the public.

Budapest taxis have yellow number plates and yellow taxi signs. Taxi companies use different tariffs, but they do have to abide by a price ceiling.

Sightseeing by car is not recommended unless you know the city extremely well, as there are frequent traffic jams and roads are often closed near construction sites. The only way to drive from Buda to Pest is across the bridges, often at a very slow pace indeed.
