Rijksmuseum
The Rijksmuseum is Amsterdam's largest and most popular museum, and is home to the best collection anywhere of 17th century Dutch Masters, including works by Rembrandt and Vermeer, as well as magnificent collections of silver, Delft Blue, dolls houses, prints, drawings, mysterious Asian art and a presentation on the history of the Netherlands.
Anne Frank’s House
The house where Anne Frank and her family hid from the Nazis in a secret annex for two years during World War Two and where she wrote her famous diary. The actual diary is now on display and the house has been returned to its original style to allow people to feel the atmosphere of that time.
Vincent Van Gogh Museum
One of the city's best museums, housing a collection of more than 200 paintings and 500 drawings by Van Gogh and his contemporaries, the largest collection of his work anywhere. Van Gogh's own work is arranged chronologically in five periods which give a fantastic insight into his life and his work.
The Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art
Housing the best collection of modern art in the Netherlands, The Stedelijk has notable works from Picasso, Matisse, Cezanne, Mondrian and Chagall, amongst others as well as temporary exhibitions by new artists.
The Rembrandt House Museum (Rembrandthuis)
The former home of the famous Dutch painter, Rembrandt van Rijn, has been kept as it was when when he lived here in the 17th century. You can look around his studio and his living area as well as view many of his works; of the approximately 290 etchings Rembrandt made, 260 are on display in the Rembrandt House. The museum is al so the proud owner of four of Rembrandt’s copper etching plates. There also paintings by Rembrandt’s contemporaries, his pupils and his teacher Pieter Lastman.
The Skinny Bridge
1281 bridges link the 90 islands that make up Amsterdam. The original bridge was built in 1670 but was so narrow that it was hard for two people to pass one another so a wider one was built in 1871. It is still one of the most beautiful bridges in Amsterdam and is illuminated each night with thousands of fairy lights making it popular with lovers and photographers.
Singel Floating Flower Market
Built in 1862, the Singel Flower Market is on one of the oldest canals of Amsterdam and has since become the best-known flower market in Holland. With the merchandise displayed on floating barges, fresh flowers are brought in every day and range from the traditional Dutch tulips and geraniums to delicate indoor cypresses and manobole plants from the Easter Islands.
