Cross the footbridge to find yourself in the magical world of shady grounds surrounded by a superb fir forest
Colmar is situated 31 km from Murbach and is one of the most attractive towns in Alsace. Colmar is filled with mediaeval and early Renaissance buildings, with half-timbered structures, gables, and gracious loggias. Tiny gardens and washhouses surround many of the homes. Its old quarter looks more German than French, filled with streets of unexpected twists and turns. As a gateway to the Rhine country, Colmar is a major stopover south from Strasbourg. Near the vine-covered slopes of the southern Vosges, it's the third-largest town in Alsace.
Colmar has been so well restored that it's Alsace's most beautiful city, far more so than Strasbourg. While walking its streets, you'll find it hard to tell that Colmar was hard hit in two world wars.
